Caucasian Rugs: Guide to Karachopf Kazak Rugs

I recently called John Wertime to discuss this project in regards to the book he and Dick Wright wrote Caucasian Carpets and Covers. I explained how I was using their work to build upon for my theory.

I had previously written:

"Wright, and Wertime in Caucasian Carpets and Covers page 137 show a Karachopf which they attribute to Borchalo district Karachop village. I cannot find Karachopf or any phonetically similar spelling anywhere in Georgia or Azerbaijan. The closest I can come is Karchakhpyur in Armenia, south of lake van."

I am not sure if John was aware that I had written that but he very kindly explained to me that Karachopf was a district with seven weaving villages of which Mugenlu was the largest. I searched my maps and assumed that Mugenlu was the village on the Armenian border in the southern edge of the Bolnisi district. I guessed wrong as Robert H. "Bob" Nooter explained to me recently. The proper village is due east of Tbilisi.

Perhaps more importantly for our purposes it firmly anchors a large body of rugs to the Mugenlo area of the Gardabani district of the old Bordjalo Khanate.

I Kazak Karachof comprendono due modelli di disegno: quello più noto con un grande ottagono centrale e questo chiamato a poligoni rossi. I poligoni qui sono semplici croci, con al centro una scacchiera; la bordatura presenta due motivi diversi nelle fasce orizzontali e verticali; il classico motivo a doppie corna nei due rettangoli bianchi ha qui un ricciolo al centro del bastone mai visto altrove. Disegno, colori stato di conservazione fanno di questo tappeto un vero pezzo da collezione.

Questi rinomati tappeti vengono attribuiti all'omonima cittadina georgiana, pur se annodati anche in altre località limitrofe. Sono manufatti reperibili nel mercato mondiale in misure piuttosto grandi e presentano un impianto grafico che richiama quello degli Holbein a disegno ampio. Essi sono composti da un principale medaglione centrale, solitamente di colore bianco e a forma ottagonale, i cui vertici sono costituiti da dei piccolissimi quadrati rossi e blu con puntini bianchi, disposti a scacchiera. Il medaglione presenta all'interno figure geometriche rettangolari dove al centro di ognuna di esse posano delle forme zoomorfe simili a corna di ariete opposte una all'altra. Il campo è disseminato da tutti questi motivi animali e all'estremità del medaglione centrale sono situati dei rettangoli, sempre di colore bianco, in coppia fra di loro secondo l'antico schema anatolico 1+4. Le bordure minori interne ed esterne presentano il motivo del medachyl. Il colore di fondo solitamente è rosso, verde e rarissimo è il blu. Sono tra i tappeti più rari e ricercati dai collezionisti.
