Karagashli Rugs
Karagashli is a village in North
East Azerbaijan in the area that was the Persian
Khanate of Kuba. Karagashli are a slightly finer
than average Kuba with an average knot count 135
- 145 knots per square inch.
There is also a group of rugs
that appears very similar to Karagashli rugs but
structurally fall into the Shirvan group. At this
point I am unable to assign them to any
particular area in Shirvan. So for working
purposes I am calling this group Gubpa Shirvans
after the red cartouches at each end which
Bennett calls Gubpa. Oriental
Rugs Volume 1 Caucasian. page 209. Bennett
shows a number of related rugs plates 256 - 261. Schurmann
shows a beutiful old example as plate 66 Caucasian
Rugs. See also plate 44 Hubel,
Reinhard G. The Book of Carpets.
