Proto-Tulip Group

• Court Kilim from the Ulu Mosque in Divrigi I include this in the lineage of the Tulip Group even though I think it is 2nd quarter 16th century Egyptian since these are Kilims are often cited as the groups progenitor.

• Turkish Rugs: The Casper Foy Karapinar Long Rug Wendel Swan pointed out to me quite rightly that this rug is stylistically closer to the Court Kilim from the Ulu Mosque than to the Tulip group. I suspect that this carpet is a workshop Turkish piece inspired by the Court Kilim group that I believe was made in a Mamluk workshop shortly after the Ottoman victory over the Mamluk in 1517.

• Karapinar Tulip Rug from the Philadelphia Museum of Art This rug shares a stylized Iris Flower motif similar to the ones seen in the Court Kilim from the Ulu Mosque.

• Karapinar Yellow Ground Tulip Rug from Berdj Achdjian this rug has a 4 petal motif where two of the petals are longer than the other two. It shares this motif with the Court Kilim from the Ulu Mosque and to a lesser extent with Turkish Rugs: ”Cantoni” Karapinar Rug 17th C. Rippon-Boswell lot 71 .

Tulip Group
the estimates of age of this group tend to be all over the place. Take the Textile Museum Carpet for example, if it went up at auction today we might well see the date range be estimated to range somewhere between circa 1600 and 17th century. the Textile Museum estimates the age in the 19th century. I think the Textile Museum estimate is way out of line but as I looked at it I think I understand there rational. Dr. Mae Beattie wrote that the Court Kilim from the Ulu Mosque in Divrigi was 17th century. Then Charles Grant Ellis used that work to date the Karapinar Tulip Rug from the Philadelphia Museum of Art to the 18th/19th century. Based on that the Textile Museum carpet gets labeled 19th century. I think Beattie missed the call on the Court Kilim by at least 100 years and everything cascaded from there. I think the Court Kilim is late 1st quarter 16th century. That the Foy Casper Karapinar Long Rug is circa 1550. The PMA Karapinar Tulip Rug is tougher to date since it has particularly close comparables so let me date it to second half 16th century. That puts the Tulip group in line as circa 1600 and onward.
