Turkmen Silk Shawl or Head Scarf
Size: 3 foot 5 inch by 3 foot 5
inch by 10 foot.
Prior to the rule of the Pakistani
backed terrorist army Taliban this is the sort of scarf a woman would
wear to show modesty in Afghanistan. I believe that this one is
Turkmen. I am at a loss as how to date these so I will stop short of
calling it Antique and I will settle for 20th century. It certainly
does not seem new.

Direct Scan Left
This is a highly magnified
scan to show the fine work. In the collection I bought there were three
of these. All seem very similar in look and feel even though they are
all distinctly different. I mention this because I initially thought
these might be silk and cotton Adras cloth from Turkmenistan. With one
of these pieces I found a spot where I could take a warp and weft
sample. Both tested as silk so I am assuming that these are all silk.
One of my weaknesses is that
I collect Hazara rugs and textiles. Most people do not know what they
looks like and even fewer collect them. Of the people who do collect
them they usually think they are Uzbek. I recently located a collection
with 3 Hazara pieces. The collector agreed to sell them only as part of
a collection and consequently I had to acquire 24 other pieces to get
the three I wanted. The price was reasonable and when I started going
through the mostly silk items I was amazed. The pieces like this one
are in excellent condition with vivid colors and great design. I agreed
not to use the collectors name but let me say it is very much what the
wife of a high ranking Foreign Service Officer might collect over the
years in Southwest Asia.
