Persian Rugs: Karaghosli Rug This rug is a very old antique rug from the Hamadan region that I speculatively attribute to the Karaghosli. P.R.J. Ford cites the Karaghosli as one of the component tribes of the Horde of Hulagu son of Cingissi Qahan. That horde evolved into the IL Khanid dynasty. Part of the tribe went north and we know them as the Karagashli of Kuba. Another part settled near Hamadan where they weave rugs.

I wrote this back in the late 1990s and now in 2007 I feel it is more likely that these Karaghosli rugs are woven by weavers who moved south in responce to the Russian occupation of the caucasus in the 19th century.

Is it really important that it was woven by the descendents of a Mongol Horde? Not really. The important part is the rug. The color is very special. The orange appears to be the pre-synthetic burnt orange that we see in very old rugs. The purple is the eggplant color seen in very old rugs. The pattern is old and I think this rug is too. This rug is so nice it transcends the ravages of time.

USE - This is an old worn rug with great color, dignity and life left in it. It is very usable in a lower traffic area and will blend well with antiques. I think this one is older than most people would think.

Color is difficult over the internet, please use the Direct Scan below for the best representation of color in this rug.

Persian Rugs: Karagoshli Rug In 1920 fifty two percent of all people in Persia spoke some form of a Turko-Mongolic language as their "Milk Language". The Pahlavid Dynasty strove to wipe out any trace of the people's heritage (Ethnic Cleansing) but it is still possible to recognize many of the historical lineages.
