Khamseh Bird Rug
~1880 Persian Khamseh "bird rug",
48" X 8. Made in Fars district
of southwest Iran. Woven on an ivory, gray and
brown wool non-depressed warp with two shoots of
red wool weft between each row of symmetrical
knots. It is dyed with a wide variety of abrashed
vegetal dyes. It has three stepped diamond, ivory
ground medallions. The medallions and the dark
blue field are both filled with a whimsical array
of birds, animals, flowers and plants. The main
border is a repeating design of octagons with
eight-pointed stars separated by groups of four
small botehs on a yellow ground.
