Mashhad/Mashad
rugs fit into my "Persian Rugs the O'Connell Guides" section type of
rugs of Northeat Iran. These rug are predominantly woven by weavers who
speak Persian or Turki and who are Shia Moslems. Mashhad, is
the administrative seat of Khorasan Razavi province. Mashhad Rugs /
Mashad Rugs are the best known of the Khorasan Rugs. Carpet weaving in
Khorasan predates the Pazaryk carpet going back thousands of years. In
the late 1550s some of the most perfect rugs ever woven were created in
Khorasan. See The
Perez Topkapi Prayer Rug which is one group.
The greatest Mashhad workshop of all time was that
of Soltan Ibrahim Mirza. More recently Mashad workshops included Amoghli (Amu-oghli, Amoughli,
Emoghli), Khamenei, Makhmalbaf, Saber,
and Zarbaf.
