silk ground, original selvages, fragmentary on ends,
oxidized metal, stains, holes,
The technique of wrapping or
coating gilt metal strips on parchment or animal
substrate dates back to at least the Mongol period
(13th-14th centuries), for examples, please see Watt,
James C.Y. and Wardwell, Anne E., When Silk was Gold, New
York, 1997, pls. 28-34. This brocade
features articulate lotus blossoms that relate closely to
those found on Ming ceramics and carpets such as the
fragment in the Museum für Kunsthandwerk, Frankfurt, see
Franses, Michael, "Early Ninghsia Carpets,"
Hali, vol. 5, no. 2, fig. 6, p. 136.
