Chinese Rugs: Kansu Carpet C. 1800 Sotheby's lot 102 This carpet and the Kansu carpet offered as lot 31 in this catalogue share an almost identical border and color palette, however, the design here is more directly linked to Ming textile patterns. For examples of Ming brocades in this pattern, please refer to Ellsworth, Robert Hatfield, Chinese Furniture, New York, 1970, endpapers, and Simcox, Jacqueline, Chinese Textiles, London, 1994, pl. 26. Ms Simcox, ibid., p. 30, notes that the textile pattern is similar to that of a carpet depicted in a portrait of the Hungwu emperor, 1368-1398 (see Masterpieces of Chinese Portrait Painting in the National Palace Museum, Taiwan, 1971, pl. 38.) Thus, it appears that the carpet offered here is a continuum of a long and favored Chinese carpet tradition.
