| A CAUCASIAN MEDAILLON CARPET, 18th/19th ct.,
with influences of early Indopersian Carpet
Design. Description:
An early Caucasian carpet with an unusual
medalion. The medalion is related to a carpet in
the Tuerk ve Islam Eserleri museum Istanbul.
Jourdan in the auction discription suggests that
this is a Kuba Carpet
that copied an Indo-Persian design. I can see why
Jourdon wold suggest that and I will admidt that
he may be right. However this strikes me as part
of a long tradition of Tabris/Azerbaijan workshop
carpets. I suspect that the design entered the
Indo-Persian repetoire from the pre-Safavid
Northwest Persian Turkmen art.
