In 1938 Pope described this fragment with eloquence, saying that : "The medallion is beautifully composed and the arabesques are of the finest." For an outstanding example of a Tabriz medallion carpet from the Gulbenkian Collection, (Inv. No. T.97), see: Cohen, Steven, Safavid and Mughal carpets in the Gulbenkian Museum, Lisbon, Hali, Issue 114, p. 77, pl. 3. Whereas the Gulbenkian carpet is on a more typical large scale (17ft. 5in. x 7ft. 3in.), the current example is comparatively diminutive in size, a characteristic shared with another fragmentary carpet in the Musee des Gobelins, Paris (see: Pope, op. cit., pl. 1113).
