Full Description
A lovely Shirvan rug with diagonal rows of
colorful stylized lotus palmettes' over an
ivory ground. The stylized lotus palmettes'
design is ubiquitous in the Caucasus but is
particularly associated with Shirvan, Kuba, and
Daghestan. The current piece is a village
derivation from ancient Caucasian rugs with
splendid large shrubs (see, v. g.Ulrike
Schurmann, Caucasian Rugs, Poolesville, 1990,
plate 128) or even from the large blossom'
carpets. This collectable rug has a clear village
feeling, although it is superb in its simplicity.

Literature:
We didn't find other similar rugs
published. See, however, a somewhat similar
stylized lotus palmettes development on a
Zakatala' rug published by "Ottoman
Art" on Hali magazine, Issue 100. See other
rugs with a somewhat similar motif, although more
close to shields' than stylized lotus
palmettes' on: Ian Bennett, Oriental Rugs -
Volume 1 Caucasian, Suffolk, UK, 1981, plates 119
& 120.
