One of the early books that is still worth reading if you are interested in Classical Carpets. The original is outrageously expensive but there is a reprint. I have not seen the reprint when I want to read this oneI have to vist the TM library but it is worth it. The books are huge.

Peter E. Saunders, Dr, Murray Eiland Jr. and the late Michael David all in one book. This is a must read for everyone who collects Turkoman rugs. The late Michael David section on "The New Turkoman Mythology" was a highly controversial piece when it was written and remains so to this day. A present from Ron O'Callaghan. The book is inscribed from Saunders to O'Callaghan.

A great book in it's day. Schlosser was Director Emeritus at the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Vienna. Definitely dated and surpassed by newer books but for years this was one of the best rug books published. Strong focus on classical carpets.

Picture quality is good for 1969 but well behind today's technology. This is not one of Schurmann's more important works and is really just a nice general book.

Schurmann at the top of his game. If you are interested in the Pazyryk controversy you should have this book. Important pictures of early art that relates to later rugs makes this book of special interest to me.

Excellent older book. Good pictures and solid scholaship. Before Mackie, Louise & Dr. Jon Thompson. Turkmen this was the best book on Turkmen rugs and it still hold value today. I at one point owned the copy copy Hans Konig inscribed to Christopher Hueblein Perot.

A wonderful scholarly masterful examination of perhaps the greatest piece of Safavid Persian Art. It is a wonderfully comprehensive catalog of virtually everything written on Ibrahim Mirza's Haft Awrang of Jami. Instead of making the book an exercise in connoisseurship Marianna Shreve Simpson simply reports what others have said rather than pushing her own judgements. Everything about the book is exemplary, pictures, color, paper, layout, etc...

This is one of the most important books on Persian miniature art ever printed. Soudavar has done a book that is about as good as it gets. Great pictures, sharp commentary, and solid scholarship. Additionally this book is so pretty it is a work of art itself. If you have any interest in miniature art you should have this book.

This is a very important book. Not perfect but so much better than most books museums ever bother to do. Spuhler's work suffers from the weakness of his structural analyses. His commentary and knowledge of the rugs is his strength. There is a wealth of information in this book and I would advise it to anyone serious about Oriental carpets.

Spuler puts the Mongols in a realistic historical context. Not my favorite book on the Mongols but it helps when you are looking at a stack of them to have this one to use as a gauge of fairness and accuracy.

The floral forms in the Ardabil carpets are very similar to ones we see in Mughal carpets. On the whole this is a disquieting book that asks more questions than it answers. It certainly leaves the mystery of the Ardabil carpets in a unanswered state. This is the best place to start when you are interested in the Ardabil carpets.

Lots of data very few pictures. Stone does an in-depth analysis of the rugs of the Caucasus and the work is of great value to people who like charts and figures.

A solid useful book that stands up well despite it's age. The strength of the Straka collection is the Turkmen pieces. The strength of the book is the structural descriptions. Louise Mackie played a major role in this book as did Harold Keshishian.
