Baku Rugs: Almost too good to be true Baku rug

Hello Barry,

There is an almost too good to be true Baku on eBay that looks oddly like a Karagashli. Can you tell me anything about the rug and also who is Serapi.

Thanks for your comments on the other rug.

Yours truly,
Tom C.

Hello Tom,

Feel free to ask any time I like your taste in rugs. First of all Serapi on eBay is Wade G. Shehady Jr. who ownes the best Carpet shop in Pittsburgh Pa.

Serapi on eBay & Shehady's Oriental Rugs
Wade G. Shehady Jr.
135 Freeport Road, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15215

Since 1947 Full Service Carpet Store.

Now Wade's store has been open since 47 but he does not say that his Grandfather was in business for years before that. Wade grew up in carpets and has that wealth of knowledge that only dealers develop after growing up in a business. Wade based his attribution on the structure and he noted that there is wool and cotton in the wefts.

I can see why you related this to a Karagashli Kuba. This one has the L shaped flowers that we see in Karagashlis But it is structure that decides a rug not design.. This is a wonderful rug from a first class dealer. By the way do not confuse this Shehady with the other Shehady dealer in Pitsburgh.

Best wishes,
Barry

Type: Baku. Size: 4'3" x 7'4". Age: 1880 circa. Condition: Very good to excellent. Wonderful full original pile throughout with silky wools. Not thick, but a low even lustrous wool to the touch. This age and type were never woven thick. Has some oxidized browns(no worn places only slightly lower than others). All pure early vegetable dyes. Want to eat tomato rust field, with ten pairs of double-headed birdlike designs. Through the center are four royal blue with ivory center stepped crosses. Overlapping the field are many geometric devices. Check out the evil eye. Colors of walnut eggplant, yellow-camel, soft blue, seal brown, royal blue, brick rust, ivory, and many hues of colors. A striking multi-colored diagonal striped main border surrounded by carnation like inner & outer borders. A rug one would never get tired of. Multi-colored natural wool warp with a blend of wool and cotton wefting. K.P.S.I.- 7 x 9. Complete rug with it's orignal edges and selvage.
