"Kurdish Rug
Saujbulagh area, Northwest Persia, early 19th
century
1.98 x 1.47m (6ft 6in x 4ft 10in)
Rothberg Collection
This rug was first
published in Hali 70 in an article by Milanese
dealer Alberto Levi on iconographic influences on
Kurdish carpet design. In that article, the term
'Proto-Kurdish' was coined to describe a
particular type of west Persian tradition, which
experimented with a vast lexicon of Persianate
designs that had been transferred to the region
as a result of population movements in the 18th
century. A prototype for this particular rug
was advertised in Hali 86 (p.128) by Oxfordshire
dealer Richard Purdon, although the influence of
so-called Kuba blossom carpets of the 18th
century and earlier is perhaps more informative.
However, many elements of the design, such as the
arabesque, are almost universal in the Islamic
oeuvre." www.cloudband.com Passage to
