The Red Karagashli Kuba Rug ?

Back when I tried selling rugs these two rugs passed through my hands. A well known dealer/expert/author/lecturer identified these rugs as Karagashli Kuba. The sticking point in my mind was that he had a financial interest in the rugs.

Over the I have pondered these rugs and I see less and less compelling reasons to call them Karagashli. First of all I do not see Karagashli rugs that look particularly like these. But that is not a major point. Structure is a major point however and it does not match up. At about 75 knots per square inch that is low.

Pete Stone is one of the great knot counters and experts on structure and he mentions averages of 113 KPSI for Kuba rugs and that Karagashli Tuba rugs average 144 KPSI. Oriental Rug Lexicon

Red Structure: Symmetrical. 7 knots per horizontal inch and 11 knots per vertical inch. 77 per square inch (1194 per square decimeter). Depressed.

Blue Structure: Symmetrical. 8 knots per horizontal inch and 9 knots per vertical inch. 72 per square inch (1116 per square decimeter). Depressed.

If they are not Karagashli, are they Kuba?

The structure points to the Kuba region of the Caucasus..

Red Structure: Symmetrical. 7 knots per horizontal inch and 11 knots per vertical inch. 77 per square inch (1194 per square decimeter). Depressed.

Blue Structure: Symmetrical. 8 knots per horizontal inch and 9 knots per vertical inch. 72 per square inch (1116 per square decimeter). Depressed.

Yarn Spin: Z.

Warp: ivory wool

Weft: 2 shots ivory wool

Pile: 2 Wool singles.

Ends: Warp fringe or 1/4-inch weft faced plainweave skirt with warp fringe.

Selvages: 1 cord red wool.

So if they are not Karagashli rugs what are they?

After thought and study I am now convinced that they are best attributed to the Lezghi of the Arta Stal area of southern Russian Daghestan.
