A TURKMEN EMBROIDERED CHERPI, UZBEKISTAN

New York 6,000—8,000 USD Session 1, 04 Apr 01 10:15 AM

Lot Sold. Hammer Price with Buyer's Premium: 9,600 USD

DESCRIPTION
A TURKMEN EMBROIDERED CHERPI, UZBEKISTAN, THIRD QUARTER 19TH CENTURY

with applied metal ornaments, slight losses to ground and embroidery,

length: approximately 3 ft. 6 in. (1.07m.)

The yellow silk ground of this magnificent embroidered ceremonial mantle denotes that it was woven for a married woman, whereas unmarried women would have worn green and older women, white.

The unusual design, with its bold pomegranate-filled boteh above a coffee pot and Cyrillic inscription share many elements with 19th century Central Asian suzanis; for an example of contemporaneous Lakai embroidery, see lot 3 in this sale.
