Antique Kazak Rug small cartouche pattern on an ivory field This design is a wonderful all over small cartouche pattern with an ivory field. Kazak The cartouche medallion is a stylized double arrow. This is one of the rare designs that seems to have gotten lost at the start of the Commercial period. The only comparable rug I know of is in a internationally known private Massachusetts collection. The color and range of color is exceptional.
Color is difficult over the internet, please review the Direct Scans below for the best representation of color in this rug.
This rug dates to early in the Czarist period. That period from roughly 1830 to 1880 is the period in which the Czarist Russians solidified their empire in the Caucasus. This period ended with the beginning of the commercial period 1880 to 1913. This rug is clearly from the period before the commercial period.

Please note not only the color but also the range of color. I have not had laboratory dye testing performed but I can say the colors certainly look vegetal. This piece has an exceptionally vivid variegated green.
