Persian Miniature Painting: attributed to Shaykhzadeh Mahmud Bukhara, third quarter 16th century

Painting attributed to Shaykhzadeh Mahmud Bukhara, third quarter sixteenth century.

Shaykhzadeh Mahmud

Plate 70b. Persia, Mid Sixteenth Century, Library of the Kunstgewerbemuseum, Berlin., Paris.

La Miniature En Orient by Ernst Kuhnel 1925

Translator's Note:

This piece is very much in the style of Shaykhzadeh Mahmud. With picture quality such as it is I seen no reason to dispute Kuhnel. It is interesting to note that Kuhnel refers to the artist as Shaykhzadeh Mahmud. I should note that even though Kuhnel does not say the piece is signed but I suspect it must be.

Shaykhzadeh Mahmud was a student of Bihzad at the court of the Timurid Prince Soltan Hosayn Mirza Bayqara where he was known as Shaykhzadeh. In about 1529 he went to Bukhara where he was known as Mahmud Muzahhib. See Bahari, Ebadollah. Bihzad Master of Persian Painting for an interesting discussion of Shaykhzadeh.
