This is a high knot count
rug from one of the many smaller workshops in Isfahan. In the 16th and 17th
centuries Isfahan was a major center of carpet
production. By the 18th century and the Afghan
Invasion major workshop production ceased
entirely. Some experts interpret this to mean
that no rugs were made in Isfahan until the 20th
century. That of course is not true, small
production continued even after the workshops
closed. In Kings,
Heroes, and Lovers the great Iranian scholar
and artist Parviz
Tanavoli published a splendid example of a
19th century Isfahan.
The more one looks at Isfahan rugs the more obvious
it becomes that the rugs draw heavily on the
architecture of 16th century Safavid
Isfahan. The rug to the right
draws heavily on the art and architecture of one
of the great cities of the world.

Condition: As new, no dye run, no
holes, no tears, and no repairs. This rug lays flat.
Size: 3 foot 6 inch by 2 foot 2 inch
Use: Well suited to floor use in a better home.
Origin: Persian,
imported from Isfahan Iran.
A note about the construction:
|
Asymmetrical knot open to the left.
Isfahans have a two level
construction. One rigid weft
and one sinuous weft
force the knots onto two planes so that only one
of the two knot nodes are visible from the back. Isfahans are among the very
best rugs made in Iran (and the world) and this
is an excellent example. Well suited to floor use
in a better home.
Isfahans average 200 to 625
knots per square inch with a few small sized
pieces up to 900 knots per square inch.

This rug is from Herat Orientals of
Alexandria Virginia. Zia Hassanzadeh the owner and I are
old friends and we have done business for years. Zia has
given me Carte Blanche to select the rugs I like from his
inventory and Herat Orientals will handle the sale and
ship them.
This is an ideal opportunity for you since this way
you can find first quality rugs from the inventory of one
of the major importers to the US market. Herat also
carries a large inventory of large and antique carpets
and rugs.
Best wishes,
