Antique Yacub Khani Timuri Carpet

Size: 5 foot 5 inch by 9 foot.

This is the best Yacub Khani Carpet that I have ever seen. I collected this one a number of years ago and it has always been my favorite rug in my collection. This carpet is an Afghan Yacub Khani not the more common Persian Timuri. The key to this is that this piece has the limited color palette seen in Afghan piece. The Afghan Yacub Khani used natural dye stuff that they in large part gathered. The Timuri in Persia bought the wool dyed in the marketplace.

The Yacub Khani are an offshoot of the Timuri.

In 1856 the Persians freed Herat with the help of the Timuri. Then England invaded Persia and forced the Persians to withdraw from Herat. Many of the Timuri withdrew to Persian Khorasan where they worked as mercenaries. In 1873 Yacub Khan the former Governor of Herat raised a mercenary army in Khorasan and invaded Herat. The Timuri who returned with him became known as the Yacub Khani.

The dyes in this piece look very good. There is loss of the brown and black pile giving this rug a sculpted look. When the sun light hits this rug the pile appears to glow with the best jewel tones we expect from natural dyes. This rug is pretty in any light but must be seen in bright sun light to be believed.

Yacub Khani Timuri Versus Persian Timuri

The Yacub Khani Timuri uses less colors and more browns than Persian Timuri. In Persia there was more access to commercially died colors. In Afghanistan there was not the market to support colors like in Persia. For example we rarely see the bright yellow common in Persian Timuri rugs.
