| I have focused on
the court carpets of the 16th century but it occurred to
me that there are other rugs to study. Over a period of
time I will collect images of these rugs that appear in
miniatures. I have decided to call them "Ordinary
Rugs". Since they may be tribal, village or city
rugs I wanted a term to differentiate them from rugs that
are obviously produced at the court workshops. |

Infinite Repeat Medallions with Herati Border.
Detail "Coronation of Soltan Hosayn Mirza Bayqara" Attributed to Mansur, Herat circa 1469
Soltan Hosayn Mirza Bayqara was the ruler of Astrabad and used that to gain the throne of Herat. It is probable that the tribes we know as Turkmen were vassal to Soltan Hosayn Mirza Bayqara .

Timurid Repeating Squares
Detail The Traveler and the Dervish. c.
1486 possibly by
Hajji Muhammad, Herat 1486.
This piece is from a manuscript of the Golestan of Sa'di produced at
the court of Soltan Hosayn Mirza Bayqara who was the ruler of Astrabad and Herat. It is probable that the tribes we know as
Turkmen were vassal to Soltan Hosayn Mirza Bayqara. We can be relatively certain that
at least the Yomut and the Gocklin were and since Soltan Hosayn Mirza Bayqara was more powerful than the Khan of
Khiva it is likely that he was lord over all the
Turkmen for at least part of his reign.

L'Orients. Plate 46
and notes page 269. In Indian Painting Dr. Pratapaditya Pal suggested that a page of the Hamzanama in the Los Angelos County Museum of Art
contains the first incidence of honoring a guest
with a red carpet. This example is 77 years older
than that one.
