Auktion 70 December 1, 2007

Lot Nr.: 36

Bezeichnung: ARABI HAUPTTEPPICH
Herkunftsland: Südwestpersien, Fars,
um 1850
Abmessungen: ca. 436 x 184 cm
Schätzpreis in EUR: 4800 €

JBOC Note: At one point I would have attributed this one to the Khamseh Confederation but Arab or Arabi works. There are Persians who are linguistically Arab who weave these rugs. Interestingly the CIA has been trying to stir up an anti-Iranian revolt among these people in the last few years. it has not been successful since their loyalty as Shia outweighs any Persian/Arab contention. They have been doing the same thing with greater success with the Baluch in Sistan. the Baluch are Sunni.

The night blue, from a tight diamond lattice, which includes flowering shrubs, covered box is a pattern beigegrundiger beams up, the five interconnected, red diamonds and two peaks at the ends. Three narrow border strip with Botehs and bird abstractions. The Kelley format of this one-Arabi Knüp ferin in southwest Persia manufactured carpet suggests that he is not for a nomadic dwelling was foreseen, but in the main room of a Persian city apartment was used, probably a commissioned work. -- Pages newly wrapped, Flor uniformly low, repaired several points, down minimally reduced, still remains above the original kilims.

I am not looking to buy or sell. I am reviewing this rug to place it in context and to use it as a teaching aid.

Thanks and best wishes,
