6 Yellow Deer Released Into Khatam Woods

Six Iranian yellow deer were released into the protected region of Bagh-e Shadi Forest in Khatam, Yazd province, director general of Yazd Department of Environment told IRNA.
Seyyed Hessam Hosseini noted, “Two of the deer are male and the rest female. Brought all the way from Dasht-e Naz (Naz Plain) in Sari, northern province of Mazandaran, they were transferred to a fenced area stretched across 200 hectares.“
He recalled that preliminary studies for the scheme had started in 2001, adding, “The main purpose of transferring the deer was to help preserve and promote reproduction of the rare species in Iran’s nature.“
He put the project’s cost at 500 million rials, insisting that the region provides a favorable habitat for breeding the species.

Meanwhile, the department’s Public Relations Office stated that Bagh-e Shadi Forest is one of the most beautiful wooded areas in the country. “It is extended over 37,000 hectares, 50 kilometers off Harat, the capital city of Khatam, and 300 kilometers south of Yazd,“ he stated. The indigenous vegetation comprises cashew, oriental almond, astragal, caltrop, turpentine, maple and soapwort. The region is also home to brown bear, pleske’s ground jay and bustard. Recently, the yellow deer was added.
The regional woods are a continuation of Zagros forests which provide a habitat for Iranian yellow deer.
