Tafresh Rugs

Guide To Tafresh Rugs & Carpets

Tafresh or Tafres is in-between Hamadan and Qum in the province of Markazi. It is closer to Qum but the rugs are of the Hamadan type.  Tafresh is in the Markazi province of Iran just northeast of the Arak weaving area.

Tafresh Rugs use the Hamadan Rug Weave

Single weft is called “Sennah Baft” or Hamadan weave. Here the wefts are rigid and the warps are sinuous. As you can see in the sketch the wefts are heavier than the warps. It is woven with symmetrical knots. Since there is only one shot of weft between each row of knots this shows every other warp which makes these rugs easy to spot.

Woollen pile on cotton foundation. Handknotted. This rug is from Tafresh in Western part of Persia. Almost all the rugs from this town have this design, which consists of a large medallion resting on a red field. Tafresh rugs are very well made and are hard wearing. They are woven with very good quality wool with beautiful colouring. As their design is rather geometric this type of rug is a perfect companion for rooms with either traditional or modern furnishing and decor. AGE: Circa 1950s
