Wendel Swan was kind enough to send me his image that he took in the Vakiflar Museum in Istanbul. It is very similar to rug that turned up at a Rippon Boswell sale in Wiesbaden Germany. Please compare this to Turkish Rugs: Karapinar Long Rug C. 1600. The Rippon Boswell description refers to this as "a fragment in the Vakiflar Museum, Istanbul (one medallion)" and "Woven in glorious colours on a brown ground (like the Vakiflar fragment)". I believe this piece was published in BALPINAR, BELKIS & HIRSCH, UDO, Teppiche des Vakiflar - Museums Istanbul. Wesel, 1988, pl. 34. (It was, I was surprised to find I had a mint copy of this book packed away in a forgotten box of rug books. Hi Barry, I'd like you to have one image that I took in the Vakiflar in Istanbul about 4 years ago. It is labeled 16-17th Century and in my opinion may be the earliest Karapinar tulip style. Age is very difficult to determine, but the Turkish museums often have records of when certain carpets were given to mosques. I have no idea whether that is the case with this rug. It is published in Oktay Aslanapa's One Thousand Years of Turkish Carpets and perhaps elsewhere, but there are few good images of it. Mine may not be the best, but it's better than what you could scan. I'd be happy to share information and images of Karapinars as my research proceeds. Best, Wendel
