Ersari and Ersari Beshir Bags
and Trappings
|

We know that the Ersari confederation stretches back
over 1000 years. Back when the Tekke were just a Aymaq of
the Salor the Ersari were an old confederation. So where
then are the old Ersari bags and trappings. It is unusual
to see one attributed to earlier than the 19th century.
Even old ones are generally attributed to Circa 1880 or
second half 19th century. On occasions someone will go
"Early 19th century" but that is rare. if i had
to imagine what a very old Ersari torba would look like I
would expect it to look like Ersari torba ex Vojtek Blau
circa 1875.
It is important when looking at the bags and trappings
of the Ersari Confederation to remember that the ersari
are a group of Turkmen tribes. the ersari are the remnant
of the old Seljuk confederation. the seljuk were the
dominant

Beshir Chuval E. B. Long Collection. George
O'Bannon: This Beshire Juval has a rare use of the Chinar
gul on a juval. This good, strong green is found in early
Beshire weavings. Note the atypical color use, e.g.
zig-zag, not diagonal.
| Ersari Torba Diamond Gul w/latchhooks |

I discussed an Ersari Torba with
Mark Keshishian former President of ORRA and he suggested
a Yomud influence to Diamond Guls with latchhooks. Thsat
made me think and I imediately saw the triparate device
in the outer border. This triparate device is most
commonly seen in Yomud weaving and I recognise it most
commonly from Yomud Ensis. Ersari Torba Yomud Influenced 20th C

Sotheby's wrote: "This chuval, the design of
which is clearly derived from Ikat fabrics, forms part of
a well documented group of weavings. Related published
examples include those illustrated in Between the Black
Desert and the Red, Turkman Carpets from the Wiedersperg
Collection, Pinner, R. and Eiland, M.L., San Francisco,
1999, pl.63, p.91; Oriental Rugs Volume 5 Turkoman,

Central Asian Rugs, Schürmann, U., Frankfurt, 1969,
pls.44 & 45 and Turkoman Rugs, Thacher, A.B., New
York, 1940 pl.36."
I fail to grasp the argument for a Ikat origin for
this design either a priori and a posteriori
