Hello,
I am a long time admirer of your ethnologue. It is a
wonderful tool and I find it very useful in my study
of the nonverbal aspects of language. I hope I do not
sound too picky but one of your categories bothers me.
You call Oguz Turkic/Southern. While Southern Turkic
is a nice descriptive phrase it is lacking and meaning
and context. The proper name of the language is Oguz.
Placing:
Azerbaijani (5)
AZERBAIJANI, SOUTH [AZB] (Iran)
AZERBAIJANI, NORTH [AZE] (Azerbaijan)
KHALAJ [KLJ] (Iran)
QASHQA'I [QSQ] (Iran)
SALCHUQ [SLQ] (Iran)
CRIMEAN TURKISH [CRH] (Uzbekistan)
SALAR [SLR] (China)
Turkish (4)
BALKAN GAGAUZ TURKISH [BGX] (Turkey (Europe))
GAGAUZ [GAG] (Moldova)
KHORASANI TURKISH [KMZ] (Iran)
TURKISH [TRK] (Turkey (Asia))
Turkmenian (1)
TURKMEN [TCK] (Turkmenistan)
Under Oguz would then fit and your information would
be more complete.

If I haven’t completely lost you by now your Turkmen
is actually Asary (Azeri) and could be classified as
Western Asary (Azeri) to go with Northern and Southern
Azeri. I realize that politics dictate academic
perceptions so I can understand your usage of Turkmen
and Azerbaijani North and South. However I suggest it
is an error to assign language names on the basis of
temporary geographic political entities rather then on
the people who speak the language in question.
Best wishes,
Barry O’Connell
