The
von Bode Dragon and Phoenix Rug
|
This rug was located in
Rome Italy by Dr. Wilhelm Von Bode of the Kaiser
Friedrich Museum (now the Bode Museum) in Berlin,
Germany. It is very close in style to a carpet in
Marriage of the Foundlings, a fresco in the
Spedale di Santa Maria della Scala in Siena,
Italy painted between 1440 and 1444 by Domenico
di Bartolo, c.1400-1447. For that reason von Bode
argued convincingly that this rug must predate
the painting. This rug is usually credited to the
14th century while others at times date this from
the 13th to the 17th century.

Meander Borders by Jim Allen.
