Kars

• Kars is the capital of Kars province in Eastern Turkey. Kars is the center of Azeri culture in Turkey and it also has a significant Kurdish population. Early in the 19th century there was a large Armenian population who moved into the Caucasus when the Christian Russians took control. It was roughly in the period from 1870 to W.W.I that many Moslem Azeri moved into the Kars area.
• Kars is a collection point for village rugs. Kars rugs are often called Kars Kazaks. They tend to look like Kazak rugs woven in the more subdued palette of eastern Turkey. I attribute this to the large number of Armenians who lived in the Kars area and then moved to the Caucasus from the first quarter of the nineteenth century on. I remember a dealer explaining to me that the difference between a Kazak and a Kars Kazak is like the difference between Tomato red and tomato soup red. Kars Kazaks has soft colors and real Kazaks have bright clear strong colors.

Transylvanian

Transylvania was part of the Ottoman Empire for 156 years from 1541 to 1697.

One of the nice parts of where I work is that I have access to people with expertise in almost anywhere. When I questioned our Transylvanian born "Area Expert" and he told me there are still Turks in Transylvania who weave rugs. Not as nice as these but who is to say they did not weave rugs like this in Ottoman times.
