Antique Luri Bag Face

Size: 1 foot 5 inch by 1 foot 8 inch.

This bag is from one of the East Coasts most prominent shop. They called this bag a Luri Bag Face. I feel very comfortable with their attribution and with their date of Circa 1900. The bag has some outstanding attributes. The white in the field is cotton but the wonderful white warps are wool. Almost two thirds of the bag has white wool warps which remind me of the wool in the very best Qashqai rugs. Since the weaver had white wool of high quality we know they went to extra care to use white cotton. Obviously because they wanted the face of this bag to be as bright as possible. The bag also has that wonderful gold color that is seen in the very best antique Luri and Bahktiari rugs.

Please note the broken border in the lower right corner. This is an identification point for these Luri bags. it is very common.

This is piece dates to Circa 1900. All the dyes look natural. It is a handmade pile weaving from Iran.  It is handmade and in very good condition.

Luri Bag Face Size: 1 foot 5 inch by 1 foot 8 inch. Structure: Symmetrical knot. 7 knots per horizontal inch and 8 knots per vertical inch.  56 per square inch (868 per square decimeter). Color: Night's edge blue, brick red, gold, royal blue, moss green, onyx, ivory, aquamarine, plum. Yarn Spin: Z. Warp: 3 ply wool. Weft: 2 shots madder wool. Pile: 2 wool singles. Ends: Stabilized with .5 inch warp fringe. Selvages: 1 cord plain, brick red wool. Handle: Light-medium, durable, pliable. Further Notes: Very good condition, selvage broken in 3 places.
