Antique Spindle Bag

Size: 11 inch by 1 foot 10 inch.

They called this bag a Bahktiari Spindle Bag. I feel a little more comfortable in using the term Luri/Bahktiari following the attributions in Jim Opie's Tribal Rugs. The white in the field is cotton and the wrappings are goat.

This is piece dates to late 19th century or circa 1900. It is a handmade sumac bag from Iran. It is handmade and in very good condition.

Luri/Bahktiari spindle bag.

Size: 11 inch by 1 foot 10 inch.

Structure: Sumac weave

Colors: Old ivory, yachting blue, goldenrod, sienna, navy blue, emerald, rose, black.

Yarn Spin: Z.

Warp: 2 ply wool. (brown and tan)

Weft: Ground color.

Pile: 2 wool singles.

Ends: Plait stitch.

Selvages: Joined by plait stitch, black goat.

Handle: Medium, durable.

Further Notes: Very good condition, some minor wear on ends. This piece shows wear consistent with use that causes me to suspect that it is 19th century.
