The Danny Mehra Tajik Kelim

Antique Central Asian Kelim

Size: 7 foot by 10 foot 2 inch.

When I first saw this it was caked with dirt in a stack of Kelims that had come out of Mazar-i-Shariff during the height of the fighting. Rumor was that the mosques were stripping the halls rather than let it fall to the Pakistani invaders. I pulled this one and sent it out to be washed. I knew if it cleaned up well and the colors were good it would be a treasure. It certainly measures up to to my hopes.

This is a handmade Antique Central Asian Kelim. The dyes are good and appear to be natural. It dates to the late 19th or early 20th century.

This Kelim is currently in the Danny Mehra collection.

Structure: Interlaced outlining slit tapestry, plain weave.

Color: Dusty rose, royal blue, milk chocolate brown, lemon, old ivory.

Yarn Spin: Z.

Warp: 2 ply brown wool.

Weft: 2 ply brown wool.

Ends: Heavy crossed wefts with 2 inch warp fringe.

Selvages: Slit tapestry.

Handle: Light, durable, pliable.

Further Notes: Good condition, dime size hole, some wear in plain weave, two 2 inch by 3 inch repairs made.
