Older Zolfagari Isfahan Carpet

In the loop of  Zolfagari

Size: 3 foot 6 inch by 5 foot 4 inch.

This is an older rug from one of the great Persian workshops. I recently had the chance to acquire the collection of an old friend who has decided to return to his home in Iran. He attributed this beautiful older Isfahan Carpet to the Zolfagari work shop. This rug is fine. The back is very even and shows the signs of the best workshop production.

Zolfagari is one of the great workshops of Isfahan. The Shop is not as well known as Serafian in the west and is often confused with Serafian. Zolfagari often has the elongated oval design delineating the field. The Islimis is less extravagant than Serafian but more focus is put on floral tendrils. Note the contrast of the old ivory field with the red main border and blue guard borders.

Yarn Spin: Z.

Warp: 3 ply white silk.

Weft: 2 shots sky blue silk.

Pile: 2 silk, wool singles.

Ends: 1 inch plain weave and overhand knots with 2 inch warp fringe.

Selvages: 1 cord overcastting red wool.

Handle: Light-medium, soft, durable.
