Mashwanni Bridal Mafrash

Size: 2 foot 11 inch by 4 foot 10 inch.

This is a Mashwanni Bridal Mafrash. This is a dowry item woven by young ladies in anticipation of their weddings. These bags are square in shape and then folded in half and stitched into envelope bags and elaborate tassels are attached. These bags are used on the bridal mount right behind the saddle.

Mashwanni Bridal Mafrash, Zamin Dawar Northwest Afghanistan. 20th century. Inventory #:UKN89

Size: 1 foot 5 inch by 2 foot 6 inch.

Structure: Asymmetrical knot open to the left. 8 knots per horizontal inch and 10 knots per vertical inch. 80 per square inch (1240 per square decimeter)

Yarn Spin: Z.

Warp: 2 ply tan wool.

Weft: 2 shots gray cotton.

Pile: 2 wool singles.

Ends: Folded over stitched plain weave.

Selvages: 1 cord braided black goat and attached tassels with twined design.

Handle: Soft, medium, durable.

Further Notes: Excellent condition.

UKN89s.jpg (38727 bytes) Culturally these pieces are odd. Mashwanni would appear to be a Pashtun tribe at first glance. However Pashtuns do not seem to have tradition of pile weaving of this sort of piece. Further I do not know what language the Mashwanni speak. It is rather frustrating that for all intents and purposes Afghanistan is closed to fieldwork and there is no existing Anthropological study on the Mashwanni.
