Antique Memling Gul Kazak Rug

9 foot 10 inch by 3 foot 8 inch.

This is a Memling Gul Kazak. This design is one of the oldest designs in the Caucasus. Art historians date this design in that area to at least the15th century and I suspect that it was not a new design at that point. Kazaks are the descendents of the Mongol Hordes of the 13th century and were primarily linguistically Turkic. As a Turkic people it stands to reason that they wove and I feel that this Gul predates the Cingissid period and must have it's roots in Central Asia. Since we see it in Turkic people in Central Asia and in the Caucasus, Turkey, and Iran I reason it must predate the split.

When I took the picture I cut off the bottom 2 or 3 inches but the rug is intact. Color is difficult over the internet, please review the Direct Scans below for the best representation of color in this rug.

This is a Memling Gul. One thing I found curious is that in England that call Memling Memlinc. Of course I find much about the English odd, so it is little surprise. Anyway Memling was a painter and he used similar guls in rugs that he painted.

This Gull illustrates the wonderful color in a low area.

Kazak Rugs are part of the broader category of Caucasian Rugs and Caucasian Carpets
