Luri Rugs: Antique Luri Carpet Southwest Persia

Antique Southwest Persian Luri Carpet

5 foot 1 inch by 9 foot 1 inch.

This is an exceptional old Antique Southwest Persian Luri Carpet. I feel this rug is attributable to Southwest Persia and in that group I feel it is most likely Luri. This is a very large tribal rug of a type we rarely see in the United States. The goat hair wefts are uncommon especially in a rug this big. Normally a weaver weaving a commercial rug will use something besides goat hair for the wefts. I have to assume that this was not made as commercial production for export.

How We Select Our Rugs

Color is difficult over the internet, please review the Direct Scan below for the best representation of color in this rug.

Luri Carpet, Southwest Persia,, 19th century. 5 foot 1 inch by 9 foot 1 inches. (Not including fringe).

Structure: Symmetrical. 6 knots per horizontal inch and 7 knots per vertical inch. 42 per square inch (651 per square decimeter). Depressed

Yarn Spin: Z.

Warp: 2 ply goat hair.

Weft:2 shot 2 singles winderplied in a variety of colors including red tan and yellow.

Pile: 2 Wool singles.

Ends: Reduced on bottom see below for the top.

Selvages: Plain selvage in weft color and later wrapped in red wool.

Further Notes. This rug is in very good condition. There is loss to the bottom edge and the lower left corner.

How Old Is This Piece?

First of all I know where this piece comes from. I purchased a collection from a long time Washington DC area collector who is moving into a smaller home. I was fortunate because she called me on the recommendation of a prestigious area dealer. She had accumulated this piece in the early 70s. She bought this piece as antique almost 30 years ago and after seeing it in person I have no reason to doubt it.

The wool has abrash and their is a wonderful vivid variegated green. The pile is low but in generally good condition. There is loss to the bottom edge and the lower left corner

The end finish is unusual. Originally the goat hair warp ends were woven into pyramid shaped end skirts.
