Hamadan Persian Rug

4 foot 5 inches by 6 foot 5 inch.

This is a wonderful thick pile rug from the Hamadan area with great color and good age. It might be Semi-Antique but I am more comfortable calling it old. The rug is well made and still in very good condition. Well drawn medallion with Herati pattern derivative design in the field.

Structure: Symmetrical knot. 8 knots per horizontal inch and 8 knots per vertical inch. 64 per square inch (1163 per square decimeter) Not depressed.

Yarn Spin: Z.

Warp: Cotton, white.

Weft: Cotton 1 shots, blue cotton.

Pile: 2 Wool singles.

Ends: Warp fringe.

Selvages: overcast with black wool.

Further Notes: Solid substantial rug. No holes, tears, rips or low spots. Thick pile. Great color, no runs, paint, bleeding, etc... There may be one row of knots missing on the bottom end. The loss is not into the guard borders.

This rug has good age. What then is "Good Age". When new a rug like this has an initial brashness that takes years to break in. Over a number of years depending on factors like type of wool, usage, dyes, and light, a rug's colors will mellow and gain the patina of age. This rug has entered it's peak period of beauty. But it still has substantial pile so it will stand up to heavy use.
