Antique Shahsavan Bag Panel

This is a very good, very old Shahsavan bag face from the W. Kenneth Thompson collection. Ken is a career diplomat with extensive experience in the Middle East. With years in the region and as a fluent command of Turkish Ken is an exceptional person.

John Wertime attributes a piece with similar devices to Khamseh Shahsavan, Wertime, J. Sumac Bags of Northwest Persia and Transcaucasia, 1998 Plate 21. I have listed the related published pieces below. I have to note that this has a very rare border, is the only one to have a single two headed fantastic animal, and in a rare group it stands out among the rarest of the rare.

How We Select Our Rugs

Shahsavan, Northwest, Persia. 19th Century, 11 1/2 and 13 1/3 inch Long by 13 wide (when open).

Structure: Very fine Sumac.

Yarn Spin: Z.

Warp: 2 ply Wool, white.

Weft: 2 ply Wool red), 2 shoots.

Ends: Reduced on edges.

Selvages: Reduced on edges.

Further Notes: The outer edges are raged and can be cleaned up easily the main panel from the main border in is in excellent condition. The range of color is excellent and there is very little sign of wear.

The color is off a bit in this picture so refer to the scans for color. The design in the outer border is rather unusual. Of the published examples this is the only one with this border and also the only one with the two-headed fantastic animal.

I sell pieces as I find them but normally the big retail dealers would have a repair main wash this even up the edges, and press down the bent corner. If you need a referral on a repairman I would be happy to help you find one. Recently I had a Baluch bag in similar condition. I showed it to Harold Keshishian and he had his repair people dress it up and the difference was amazing.

Opie, J. Tribal Rugs. 1992, Plate 14.5

I do not have the books but I believe Tanavoli's Shahsavan (Plates 225, 226, and 227) may be related.
