Shirvan Rug Hexagon Columns / Kurdamir District

Pile : short and very soft wool, symmetric knot.
Density : tightly woven, H 36/10 cm  X  V 44/10 cm , 1584/dmē
Warps : Z2S, thin white wool
Wefts : Z2S, thin dark brown wool, two shoots.
Back : slightly ridged
Selvedges : flat selvedges of 3 cords of two warps wrapped in figure eight
with beige wool.
Ends : missing, probably only fringes.
Colors : natural, deep blue ground with light blue in the motives, different shade from light to dark oxidized brown, oxidized black, different shade of olive green, pink, red, white.
Conditions: many trace of wear

  Comments : One vertical row of three stepped edged conjoined hexagons containing a cruciform motif and flanked by parts of hexagons on a edge blue ground. Main border with a type of Kufic motif.

Another published rug (plate 48) with the same design on a red ground and with the same main border is published in “Les Tapis Caucasiens” Edition d'art Aurora Leningrad 1984 by Latif Kerimov and is attributed to the district of Kurdamir in the Shirvan area.
The structure of this rug is described as following:

Warps, wefts and pile in wool
Symmetrical knot  45 x 47; 2115/dmē
Pile 4 mm
Colors natural
Selvedges : flat selvedges of 3 cords of two warps wrapped in figure eight
Ends: top and bottom kilim of 2 cm + fringe

Kerimov consider that the main border is typical of the Shirvan area.
