The Bortz Chelaberd
(Eagle Kazak) Rug Caucasus Circa 1800
In a discussion of great Karabagh rugs Irwin
Kirsch nominated this one saying:
"This definitely has impact and power! It
is rare and the single medallion depicts an early
age. Sotheby's says circa 1800. What is most
important are the two opposing shields at the top
and bottom of the medallion. Having talked with
several rug dealers and collectors, they believe
there are less than a handful in existence. I
believe that Jim Burns owns one and have
personally seen one in a private collection. The
latter was more squarish and had a much wider
crab border, both attributes of an older
Cherabert rug."
