Baluch
Rug NE Persia, Khorasan Region
Size 2'10" x 5'2"
Date 1880-1899
Cat. No. 216
Description In this rug one sees familiar
elements of the Baluch design vocabulary rendered
in a primitive fashion suggestive of a nomadic
setting. Three Baluch-style trees divide the
field vertically. Reciprocal animal or bird heads
rather than the more common sectioned leaves
populate the trees. Three rows of white flower
heads or "nectarine" blossoms provide
balance and stability to the field composition.
The ground color has a brownish-red tonality
reminiscent of a shade one sees in certain
Turkmen weavings. Three abrashed areas transverse
the rug.
Condition: Very Good. There are isolated areas of
slight wear otherwise the pile is full. End
kilims, top and bottom, are intact and in good
condition. Four cord selvedges are overcast with
lamb wool and small amounts of what appears to be
camel hair.
Structure Warps: wool, undyed, ivory, brown,
brown and ivory plied together.
