Rothberg Collection
view detail
The superb rug is a good example of the horror
vacui which permeates much Persian weaving. Also
published in Pacific Collections (pl.78), it was
certainly one of the classiest Persian tribal
rugs in the exhibition. Michael Rothberg's
penchant for good quality 19th century south
Persian weaving is well documented; one thinks
especially of the landmark exhibition of woven
bags curated by Rothberg and Brian Morehouse,
which took many back to the heady days of the
70s, when such weavings were more plentiful (see
Hali 86, pp.95-99). The weaver of this rug was
clearly pretty keen on the boteh. Botehs appear
within botehs in what is known as the 'mother and
child' formation. Further botehs fill the white
ground, while yet more are ranged in the main
border. |
