Full Description: Bedding bags
were used by nomadic pastoralists to store and
transport their mattresses, sheets, pillows, and
blankets. They were made in pairs, one for each
side of a camel. In the nomad's tent or in the
permanent dwelling of settled nomads, they were
opened at night and emptied of their contents. In
the morning everything went back into them and
they went back on a pile of bags at the back of
the tent or room, where they made good back
rests. The beautiful designs and colors of the
best, as in this example, were exciting works of
art for all to behold. This rare old bedding bag
has a wonderful interplay of positive and
negative motifs creating a dynamic design that
almost appears to move. Nowadays, these
three-dimensional bags are often used in Western
homes to cover a bench or table. For a discussion
and other examples of Transcaucasian mafrash, see
