The precise dating of this unusual and beautiful carpet is difficult as there are design elements linking it both to both Kangxi and Qianlong weaving. Stylistically this carpet is related to the Kangxi period (1662-1722) which is often associated with an austerity but simple beauty of design as seen in the present lot, see Eiland, M., Chinese and Exotic Rugs, London, 1979, p.64 and Franses, M., Classical Chinese Carpets I, London, 2000, p.17. Carpets from this period often have a heavily latticed, geometric field design, see for example a carpet in thve Metropolitan Museum of Art, Dimand, M.S., and Jean Mailey, Oriental Rugs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1973, fig.268. In the present lot, the lattice has vanished and the saffron four-sided ruyi cartouches appear to float on the plain camel field. The overall effect is one of simplicity and lightness. The rare border of interlinked circles has replaced the more usual fret-work border, and may be indicative of the Qianlong period. This theory is based on the fact that, although there appears to be no extant carpet published with such border, it does appear in a carpet represented in an ancestor portrait by Giuseppe Castiglione of the Qianlong Emperor (reigned 1736-1795) see Dickinson, G., and Linda Wrigglesworth, Imperial Wardrobe, Berkeley, 2000, p.47, pl.36
