This vase is a rare example of a Safavid pottery following fahua
porcelains from China. The Chinese prototype was produced in the Wanli
period (1573-1620) principally for export but not in the large numbers
of blue and white pieces. Both the palette of this example and the
moulded floral designs are typical of the pieces of this style produced
in Persia. The raised moulded designs are formed to act as cloisons to
keep separate the different coloured glazes. Two vases in the Victoria
& Albert Museum are closely related (Lane 1957, nos.92A and
93A).
