DESCRIPTION
A Timurid Cuerda Seca
pottery star tile, Persia, 15th century,
decorated in cobalt-blue, turquoise, manganese,
reddish brown and gold leaf, the radiating design
of two interlocking ten-pointed stellar motifs,
each point surmounted by abstracted trefoils, the
centre with a six pointed star
35.5 cm. diameter
Half of an identical tile can be found adorning
the entrance hall (ivan) of the 1442-46 Madrasah
Ghiyathiyah, at Khargird (see Golombek and Wilber
1988, II, Pl.233). Other tiles, of similar form
and design, are in public and private collections
including the British Museum, London, the
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the
David Collection, Copenhagen (Hayward Gallery
1976, p.261, no.393; Lentz and Lowry 1989, p.90
and 333, no.23; and Von Folsach 2001, p.174,
no.226 respectively).
