DESCRIPTION
An Iznik polychrome pottery tile, Turkey,
circa 1573-4 A.D. decorated in two shades of
cobalt-blue, turquoise, relief-red, green and
black outlines with assymetrical sprays of
hyacinths, carnations and fantastic floral motifs
24.7 by 22 cm. Tiles of this design decorate the
tomb of Prince Mustafa, son of Suleyman the
Magnificent (see illustrations in Ertug &
Kocabiyik 1995, pp. 155 - 157). An inscription
above the entrance to the tomb mentions that the
tiles were commisioned by Selim II in A.H.
981/A.D. 1573-74. The tomb is part of what is now
called the Muradiye complex in Bursa which was
started under Murad II as his own and the Ottoman
family cemetery. This complex was developed
around the Mosque of Murad II and also includes
the tombs of Prince Ahmed, son of Bayezid II,
Mehmed II, Cem Sultan and Emir Uways, son of the
Jalayirid Emir Muhammad.
