DESCRIPTION
Rugs of this group, with their arabesque
lattice design usually in saffron yellow on a
madder ground were woven from the 15th until the
17th century. The group takes its name from the
Venetian artist Lorenzo Lotto, who depicted
several rugs of this design in his work, although
they are extensively depicted in European
painting from the early 16th until the late 17th
century. Indeed, the popularity of the design in
Europe is illustrated by the fact that the design
was copied in early European carpets.
