This rug would
be the fifth known with a remarkably similar field design
and swastikas in the border among the published group of
so-called 'Bellini' 'double keyhole' or 'double
re-entrant' rugs; for a thorough discussion of the
classification of these rugs see Franses, Michael,
"The 'Bellini' Keyhole", Kirchheim, E.
Heinrich, ed., Orient Stars, Stuttgart, 1993, pp.
277-283. All five of these rugs are so similar that they
are most likely the product of a village or even a single
workshop. For the other four examples, please refer to
Museum of Islamic Art, Cairo, 1961, fig. 79; Eberhart
Herrmann, Von Uschak bis Yarkand, Munich, nr. 4, p. 32
and Hali, issue 66, pp. 62-3, advertised by Eskenazi;
Grote-Hasenbalg, Werner, Der Orientteppich, band 2,
Berlin, 1992, pl. 18; and Sotheby's London, April 21,
1999, lot 68.
An archaic religious symbol, the swastika appears in
other early Anatolian rugs such as a 'Lotto' rug in the Keir Collection,
see Spuhler, Friedrich, Islamic Carpets in the Keir
Collection, London, 1978, no. 15.
